4 out of 5 stars Uren user 2   December 13, 2007

I got this little device a week ago, since which time it has been in pretty constant use. I have had laptops and PDAs over the last few years and have never found a complete solution to the problem of taking your diary and a notepad to a meeting along with your paperwork and not lugging a load of paper, a secretary and a laptop along with you. That was my idea with this purchase, did it measure up?
The windows operating system works well and installing MS office 2003 didn't cause any problems, along with a virus checker and for those who teach: SIMS (yes, the whole thing) installed easily and quickly without a single stability problem so far. It plugs into the hard line network at work to access a secure system and my wireless network at home, no problems so far.
The touchscreen works very well and the complementary leather case and in particular the USB keyboard bring a dimension of usefulness and portability which leaves any laptop standing. If you buy one, email the seller and enquire about the optional hi speed USB port with 10/100 network port and video out - it's well worth the 40.
The GPS is okay, accurate and up to date, although very American (take the second turn at the rotary) and not overly helpful in journey planning etc. I have used a TomTom before and this is not as good although it does the job and is yet another piece of kit I don't have to carry around.
It will play a DVD on the screen, I bought a USB DVD drive from DABS and it plugged and played like everything else I've tried so far. ON drive video eats up the space available very quickly, and frankly why would you want to? The kids appreciate the in car use of the DVD as long as I don't need to Navigate - as you can't do both (quite right too).
Broadcasting from the unit to the stereo works effectively and is a nice thing but I'm not sure why you would want to.
The touchscreen is excellent - it's a samsung and does exactly what you would expect.
Downsides: well the small memory means booting up isn't as fast as it could be, working with multiple windows is possible but outside of Word apps things slow right down, for it to be portable you only get 1 hour of battery life so you have to carry around all the extra bits and pieces - I use a small camera bag.
In short, if you want it for productivity then as long as you can cope with the small screen it's a little marvel, office applications, email and the internet at the touch of your fingers, all with full function and working as you would expect. If your buying it because you are a techno geek, I guess you'd be impressed, if you're buying it to play games and DVDs and CDs then it will do this, but I think you probably spent way too much money.
Buy one, it's great. If you are not sure, email the seller, he is a great bloke and only too happen to help, support and advise. One of the great selling points is the sellers openness and obvious faith in his product.
Share and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Are UMPC's really that good ?   November 26, 2007

Forgive me for the title of my review.... I used the same title of the article that I read on the mobilepcuren site which switched me on to the whole world of UMPC's which clearly explained to me what a UMPC is !! ;-)

It wasn't easy for me to compare like with like when it comes to UMPC models but Amazon was my prefered place for trust and prices. I looked at the Samsung Q1 with its sexy curved shape but the split keyboard was more like mobile phone keys - than a useable part of an Ultra Mobile pc on the go! the memory was more than the Uren, but when you factor in the Uren's brilliant folding keyboard, the high quality leather pouch and the optional accessory pack - the Uren's a clear winner in the chic Mobile PC market and packs better value for money than the Sony UX1 or Toshiba Portege. Oh! I forgot to mention, I also saved a packet because I was looking for a mobile SAT NAV such as the Nokia Navigation pack - But no need! The Uren has it all built in - I used it discretely with my iPod earphones connected to locate a cool designer shoe shop on a first-time trip to Manchester .... giggle, well a girl loves shoes ;-)
